Eintracht fell behind early on in Freiburg, but a Jonathan Burkardt brace turned the game on its head before Vincenzo Grifo equalised late on.
Kristensen comeback Head coach Dino Toppmöller made three changes to the side that began against Bayern Munich before the international break, with Aurèle Amenda, Farès Chaibi and Rasmus Kristensen coming in for Ellyes Skhiri, Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and Aurélio Buta.
Amenda made his first start of the season following four substitute outings, while Kristensen returned to the first XI after missing five games through injury.
Early setback
The Eagles got off to the worst possible start at the Europa-Park-Stadion when a loose pass from Robin Koch inside his own half landed straight at the feet of Johan Manzambi. He strode forward and played the ball to Derry Scherhant, who squeezed a low shot past Kaua Santos into the bottom-right corner from ten metres out (2’). Burkardt levels Eintracht needed a moment to compose themselves after that shock, but they soon grew into the game. They equalised in the 18th minute after regaining possession in the centre circle and sprinting forward in numbers. Luck was on their side when the ball looped off Lucas Höler and into the path of Jonny Burkardt, who brought it down expertly inside the box and buried it into the far corner.
Turnaround complete Shortly before the interval, Jordy Makengo’s attempted clearance landed at the feet of Can Uzun, who immediately threaded a pass through for Chaibi. His low cross into the middle found Burkardt to bundle in from close range (38’).
Toppmöller’s charges were forced onto the back foot early in the second half as the hosts pushed for an equaliser. They nearly got it in the 54th minute when Manzambi’s deflected effort fizzed narrowly past the goal, while Scherhant also missed the target after being teed up by Jan-Niklas Beste (60’).
Late equaliser The Eagles barely let Freiburg have a sight of goal after that as they defended aggressively and maintained their tactical shape, thwarting the home side’s attacks time and again. Vincenzo Grifo nevertheless levelled the scores late on when his free-kick caught the visitors off guard as it flew into the bottom right-hand corner for a final score of 2-2.
