Burnley are on the verge of landing young Lazio winger Loum Tchaouna in an eight-figure agreement.
The Clarets are preparing for life back in the Premier League this summer and will need to inject adequate firepower into their frontline.
Scott Parker’s side have already made the loan deals of Bashir Humphreys, Marcus Edwards, Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming
permanent, but are now looking to recruit externally with a move for Tchaouna.
Burnley are keen to bring the Lazio forward to the Premier League, after spending just one year at the Stadio Olimpico.
According to Sacha Tavolieri of Sky Sports Switzerland, discussions have intensified in recent hours between the player’s camp and Burnley, with both sides hoping to get a deal done.
The fee is believed to be in the region of €14 million (£11.9 million) with the 21-year-old signing a five-year contract at Turf Moor.
The Frenchman made 37 appearances for Lazio last season, featuring 11 times in the Europa League as the Italian side reached the quarter-final stage.
A return of two goals and one assist isn’t anything to write home about, but Parker and Co. have obviously identified potential they are willing to invest in.
Prior to his time with Lazio, the forward spent a season with then-fellow Serie A side Salernitana, where he scored six goals and provided three assists in 35 appearances.
Tchaouna enjoyed his footballing education with Ligue One outfit Stade Rennais, making 14 appearances for the first team before moving across the continent to Italy.
The past couple of Premier League campaigns have seen the three promoted teams suffer relegation back to the Championship immediately.
If Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley want to buck this trend, they must learn from those before them and recruit well.
Proven top-flight talent is needed in abundance, and although Tchaouna is brimming with potential, he has no experience in the English game.
Outlaying £12 million isn’t going to deplete the Clarets’ budget too heavily, but it could be argued a vast amount to spend on an unknown quantity.
That said, if Parker and Co. have profiled the forward as someone they want in their team, it may prove to be a smart piece of business.
The youngster is currently competing as part of France’s squad at the U21’s European Championships, which shows that he is highly rated within the game.
Time will tell whether this move proves worthwhile for the Clarets, but there is a certain element of risk attached to the deal.
