Cade Cowell and Chance Cowell eye Mexican national team | OneFootball

San Jose Earthquakes' Cade Cowell and younger brother Chance Cowell may be looking to represent the Mexican national team.

The pair is currently in the process of obtaining their Mexican citizenship, eligible to them through their maternal grandfather, according to ESPN.

The switch would come as a surprise from the Major League Soccer player, who previously declined a call up to Mexico’s youth camps to focus on the Earthquakes. He’s also already made one senior USMNT appearance, featuring in the match against Bosnia & Herzegovina last December.

But before featuring in his senior international debut, he was asked by MLSSoccer.com about being eligible for both countries. Cowell said: "It's whoever wants me more and how I fit into their system best I guess. I haven't really gotten looks from Mexico but the United States has been great to me."

Chance, on the other hand, is only getting started. The 13-year-old is a youth player in the academy of USL Championship side Sacramento Republic. He’s also currently participating in a training camp with Mexico’s Under 15 national team.

The news of Cade and Chance Cowell comes after a wave of dual-citizenship players publicly committing. Ricardo Pepi, David Ochoa, Julian Araujo all sealed their fate last year, serving as examples for the up and coming dual-citizenship individuals looking to make a choice.

Pepi opted for the USMNT, while Ocho and Araujo selected El Tri. The commonality of dual-citizenship marks a new era of international football.
