The Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco right-back took home the top prize from the latest CAF Awards ceremony that took place at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Wednesday night.

Hakimi scooped the biggest individual honour in African football following a remarkable year in which he played a key role in dominant PSG finally winning the Champions League for the first time as part of a historic quadruple during the 2024/25 season that was only prevented from becoming a quintuple following defeat by Chelsea the inaugural summer Club World Cup final.

The 27-year-old was also an instrumental player for Morocco - shock semi-finalists in Qatar in 2022 - as they became the first African team to qualify for next summer’s World Cup finals in North America back in September.

Hakimi won African Footballer of the Year for the first time, having finished second in back-to-back years behind Nigeria duo Ademola Lookman and Osimhen.

2023 winner Osimhen placed third in 2025 after a resurgent year at club level with Galatasaray and guiding Nigeria to the CAF play-off final, where their World Cup qualification dreams were cruelly dashed again following an agonising penalty shootout defeat by DR Congo in Rabat on Sunday.

Salah came second after making history last season by matching the great Thierry Henry with his fourth Premier League Golden Boot award and also claiming Playmaker of the Season for the most assists as Liverpool eased to the title in their first season under Arne Slot, with PFA Players' Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season awards all following.

He was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and also won Liverpool Players' Player of the Season award. Salah - winner of African Footballer of the Year in both 2017 and 2018 - later captained Egypt to the World Cup with one game to spare as the second-top scorer in CAF qualifying behind only Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura.

It was a high-profile CAF awards double for Morocco on Wednesday as Ghizlane Chebbak of Al-Hilal won African Women’s Footballer of the Year, while the Under-20s clinched Men’s National Team of the Year after their shock World Cup win over Argentina in Chile last month.

Nigeria won the award for best Women’s National Team, while the Best Young Player awards went to Moroccan duo Othmane Maamma - of Watford - and back-to-back winner Doha El Madani.

Men’s Coach of the Year went to Cape Verde boss Bubista after their World Cup qualification, while the Best Goalkeeper honours went to Yassine Bounou of Morocco and Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie, the latter - who plays for Brighton at club level - winning the women’s version for the third year in a row.

Men’s Club of the Year was won by Pyramids FC following their maiden success in the Egypt Cup, CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup, with their Congolese forward Fiston Mayele also claiming Men’s Interclub Player of the Year.
