Yael Trepy has woken from a medically induced coma and shown no signs of neurological damage, two days after nearly drowning in a swimming pool while on a rest weekend in Sardinia.

According to the medical bulletin released by Sassari’s Santissima Annunziata hospital, doctors halted the 20-year-old’s neuromuscular blockade and gradually reduced his sedation on Tuesday, alongside a progressive reduction in ventilatory support.

“Maintaining optimal respiratory exchange allowed us to suspend mechanical ventilation and, in the afternoon, extubate the patient,” said Dr Stefania Milia, director of the hospital’s intensive care unit, with quotes via AlfredoPedulla.com.

On waking, the bulletin continued, Trepy “showed a full recovery of his state of consciousness: he is alert and cooperative and, at present, shows no evident neurological deficits,” with his respiratory and cardiovascular condition described as stable.

Trepy incident occurred during Cagliari weekend off

Trepy was hospitalised on Sunday after getting into difficulty in a swimming pool at a private villa in Porto Cervo, on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, during a weekend off following Cagliari’s Coppa Italia win over Arezzo.

The French forward is reported to have ended up in the deeper end of the pool and inhaled a significant amount of water before being pulled out by those nearby.

He was intubated and airlifted to hospital, where a chest CT scan revealed large quantities of fluid in his lungs, prompting doctors to place him in an induced coma to manage his treatment.

Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini posted a message of support in the aftermath, and the club has asked for the family’s privacy to be respected.

Trepy remains in intensive care given the recent extubation and the lung picture associated with aspiration syndrome, with close clinical and respiratory monitoring continuing. Further updates on his condition will follow as the situation develops.

A product of Cagliari’s youth academy since 2022, Trepy scored twice in the 2024 Coppa Italia Primavera final win over Milan under current first-team coach Fabio Pisacane, before making his Serie A debut against Cremonese in January, scoring an equaliser four minutes after coming off the bench. He signed a contract extension through to 2030 in February.
