The Ireland international has spent the bulk of his career in the top two divisions of English football, which included scoring 12 goals as the Bluebirds were relegated from the Championship last season.

So, it was a surprise to some that Robinson stuck around, and he would’ve expected to have a big role to play in helping Cardiff win promotion this season after he did remain beyond the summer deadline.

Callum Robinson opens up on Cardiff City frustration after big impact as a sub

With Robinson having featured in 17 games and scored four goals, it’s clear that he is still bringing a lot to the team, but only four of those appearances have been from the start.

To his credit, the 30-year-old is still behaving as you would expect from an experienced professional, and he came on to devastating effect against Stevenage on Tuesday, scoring the only goal of the game with a brilliant strike that helped Cardiff extend their lead at the top.

Even though that was a big moment for Robinson, he discussed his situation with Wales Online, as he admitted it has been difficult spending so much of the season watching on from the bench.

Like every player, I don’t want to be on the bench. No one wants to be on the bench. Everyone wants to be out there. But everyone will play their part and hopefully I can do that.

It’s going to be a long season. When I come on the pitch I want to try and score goals, do what I do and try to help the team get the win. The manager, Bri, wants to win every game. We are top of the league. We would definitely have taken a point, but that’s why we are top – because we go to win games, we don’t just try to hold out.”

Callum Robinson will have a big role to play in Cardiff City’s promotion push

This is a fair message from Robinson, and he is right today that every player wants to be playing week in, week out.

Clearly, though, he has remained professional, and all he can do is come off the bench and show his quality in the minutes he is given on the pitch - which is exactly what he did against Stevenage.

At the moment, it’s difficult for Brian Barry-Murphy to make too many changes, as Cardiff are playing some stylish football, and, most importantly, they are getting results on a consistent basis.

Therefore, Robinson will need to be patient, but with the busy festive period nearly upon us, the boss will have to manage his squad carefully, so more opportunities will come the way of the ex-West Brom man.

Then, it’s on Robinson. If he keeps scoring goals, he will force his way into the XI, but the only objective for Cardiff is to win promotion this season.
