Nigeria's captain, William Troost-Ekong, has decided to retire from international football with the Super Eagles, just days before the 2025 AFCON.

Troost-Ekong has represented Nigeria since 2015. He played 83 matches, took part in multiple AFCON tournaments, the 2018 World Cup, and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics. In his farewell message, he said playing for Nigeria was a tremendous honor. He thanked his coaches, teammates, and supporters, expressing pride in being captain and giving his all for the team.

William Troost-Ekong has promised to continue supporting his country through his foundation. His record with Nigeria: 83 matches, 8 goals, and most notably, the title of Best Player at AFCON 2023.
