Pape Thiaw made a point of clarifying Nicolas Jackson’s situation this Friday, January 9, after Senegal’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON semi-finals. The Lions of Teranga head coach addressed the absence of the Bayern Munich striker, who didn’t play a single minute during the quarter-final victory over Mali, in his post-match press conference.

Habib Diallo started as the number nine against the Mali Eagles, taking the spot over Nicolas Jackson. The Metz forward held onto his place throughout the first half before being replaced by Chérif Ndiaye in the second period. The former Chelsea player didn’t even get a chance to come on in this decisive clash. This technical staff decision fueled speculation.

Some observers suggested possible tension following Nicolas Jackson’s substitution in the round of 16 against Sudan. The player didn’t hide his disappointment as he left the pitch, especially since he hadn’t found the net. Pape Thiaw immediately put an end to any controversy when speaking to the media.

"It was not at all a punishment to leave him on the bench [Editor’s note]. It was a coach’s choice. He was disappointed when he was subbed off, and that’s normal because no striker likes to be replaced without scoring. He’s someone who can bring us a lot in the future and help us win."
