Injuries to Romaine Mundle and Habib Diarra have prompted questions over Chemsdine Talbi’s Europa League eligibility. The answer is tightly bound by UEFA rules and homegrown quotas.

According to Sunderland Echo, Talbi was left off List A while transfer talks continued, he stayed on Wearside but the registration deadline had already passed.

Sunderland appear able to seek a temporary replacement for Mundle after meniscus surgery that should sideline him for a few months. UEFA deems an outfield injury long term at 60 days or more, and only one such change is permitted up to matchday six.

Any switch is subject to medical approval, and the incoming player must already have been registered with Sunderland before the two September List A cut-off. When fit, Mundle regains his place and the stand-in is removed, and early recovery does not override the 60-day bar.

Talbi cannot take Mundle’s slot because of locally trained quotas. Mundle is association-trained via Tottenham, those requirements must still be met, and Talbi is neither club-trained nor association-trained, with Sunderland already at 17 non-locally trained players on a 22-man List A.

There is no suitable association-trained senior option outside List A. Academy players can use List B on a match-by-match basis, so upgrading one offers little benefit.

Diarra is expected to miss six to eight weeks, roughly 42 to 56 days, which is below UEFA’s 60-day threshold. If later evidence shows at least 60 days out, Sunderland could apply to replace him with Talbi.

Talbi could join during the league phase only if a registered non-homegrown outfield player is ruled out for at least 60 days and Sunderland use their single temporary change on him. Otherwise, his next chance is the knockout phase, when up to three players can be added by 11.59pm CET on four February 2027, subject to List A and homegrown limits.
