L'Equipe reports that Canal+ and beIN Sports have lodged a Court of Cassation appeal in their dispute with the LFP over the 2021 broadcast deal.
The Paris Court of Appeal threw out their claims in mid-January in two rulings. The broadcasters are seeking about €660 million from the league, alleging discriminatory abuse.
The row stems from June 2021, when Ligue 1 rights were awarded to Amazon’s Prime Video after the Mediapro collapse. Mediapro had bought the main package in 2018 for €784 million per season before defaulting.
After decisions by the judicial court, the competition authority and the commercial court, the Paris Court of Appeal upheld first-instance judgments from September 2023. Those became the 19th and 20th rulings to favour the LFP.
Prime Video secured 80% of matches for the 2021-22 to 2023-24 seasons for €250 million a year. At the same time, Canal+ and beIN were obliged to show lot 3, covering two Ligue 1 games per matchday, bought in 2018 for €332 million per season. BeIN Sports initially won lot 3 for 2020-24 and sublicensed it to Canal+ on identical terms.
