Racing have announced an agreement to sign Sergio Canales on a two-season deal running to 30 June 2028.

El Sardinero will have only one Canales next season, Sergio, with Athletic Club having told Racing they will keep Peio Canales, the 'Katxorro de Barrika'. Edin Terzic, the new head coach, has already monitored his progress this term.

Sporting director Chema Aragón’s plan for José Alberto López’s squad is for Sergio Canales to operate between the lines as a 10, and to drop into the double pivot when needed as an eight. Peio began last season in LaLiga Hypermotion in central midfield behind the attacking midfielder.

In his early years, Sergio Canales was a pure attacking midfielder. During the 2010/2011 campaign with Racing, which earned his move to Real Madrid, he played off the striker and carried significant goal threat. He kept that advanced role at Real Sociedad and Valencia, then moved deeper at Betis, particularly under Quique Setién, and for Spain under Luis Enrique he featured as an interior in a midfield three.

In Mexico he was mainly used in the No 10 role. With Rayados de Monterrey last season, across Apertura, Clausura, Liguilla and the Concacaf Champions Cup, he made 32 appearances, scoring 13 goals with five assists.
