Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if the Blues looked to pursue a deal for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
Chelsea were linked with Mike Maignan in the summer, but weren’t prepared to get close to AC Milan’s valuation so the Frenchman remained with the Serie A outfit.
The Blues opted to stick with their existing options of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, whilst they have talented youngster Mike Penders on loan at Strasbourg.
Despite a lot of criticism about not signing a new goalkeeper, Sanchez has made a very good start to the season, and has shown Chelsea were right to back him.
The Spain international is arguably playing the best football he’s played since joining from Brighton in the summer of 2023.

However, despite his improved form Schwarzer has labelled Sanchez inconsistent and wouldn’t be surprised if the Blues made a move for Trafford.
“James Trafford for Chelsea? You can’t write anything off,” he said as quoted on X.com.
“He’s got to go to a club where they are signing him as the number one. And of course, he’s got to perform.
“I think he needs to find a club, even if it’s on loan, between now and the end of the season where he’s going to play week in, week out and prove what a good goalkeeper he is.”
Schwarzer acknowledged Sanchez had made improvements this season, but feels his consistency is holding him back.
“The problem is his consistency,” he added.

“When you’re at a big club, you need consistency. Look at Manchester United and Andre Onana, Man City and Gianluigi Donnarumma coming in and what he’s done already.
“I will say for Robert Sanchez, I think in the last six months, has improved dramatically. He hasn’t made as many mistakes as he had done previously.
“I think he’s made some big saves. The Club World Cup final, I think for me, was by far the best game he’s ever played for Chelsea. I think obviously there’s still some way to go.”
