After twelve league games, Roma sits alone at the top of the table with 27 points out of 36. The Giallorossi have yet to draw, having won nine and lost three in Serie A so far, and lost two and lost two in the Europa League.
Former Giallorossi coach Fabio Capello spoke to Sky Sport about Gasperini’s current form: “It seems to me that the atmosphere is the same as when we won the Scudetto in 2001.”
“In my first year, I had a team under construction, like this one, while in the second we were looking for something more, a center forward: we signed Batistuta. He was crucial.”
Capello praised the work done so far by Gasperini, Roma’s true high-caliber signing: “He’s instilled strength, determination, character, and above all, consistency in this team. This is the most difficult thing in Rome, an environment where you get excited after victories and depressed after defeats. Maintaining focus is very difficult.”
The current Sky commentator continued: “Gasperini has been very good at instilling confidence in the players. He’s had moments where he’s tried to understand the characteristics of the players at his disposal, and I think he now knows everything they can give him. The players feel the confidence, they understand that the system is very demanding and they must always be attentive and focused. He’s helped players like Dybala, but especially Soulé, develop. It means the coach has got inside the players’ heads.”
There was no shortage of comparisons between Capello and Gasperini: “He can be inspiring, he knows how to approach the dressing room and the club with determination, he knows how to convince the players to do something different than what we’re used to. Roma is a place where people enjoy themselves; for Gasperini, the only pleasure is winning: the rest doesn’t matter. He’s similar to me in this respect. The real pleasure is winning, seeing the team do what they’ve prepared, seeing the young players mature. He’ll be on the ball until the end: Roma will be competitive.”
Finally, Capello emphasizes an important aspect: “Let’s remember that Roma has the Europa League to play for, and those games are costly and don’t allow for recovery; this aspect will probably favor Milan.”
