Fabio Capello argues that Juventus ‘didn’t understand’ Wojciech Szczesny as the Bianconeri treated the Barcelona goalkeeper ‘as a retiree.’

Szczesny terminated his contract with Juventus by mutual agreement last summer, only a few weeks before announcing his retirement from football.

However, he had a second thought on his future when he received a call from Barcelona in September, as the Catalans were looking for a reliable replacement for the injured Marc-André ter Stegen.

Szczesny had a year left in his contract at the Allianz Stadium, but the Bianconeri signed Michele Di Gregorio as the first-choice goalkeeper for 2024-25, pushing Szczesny out of the club.

The Poland international is having a fantastic season at Barcelona, having kept 12 clean sheets in 23 matches, conceding just 21 goals.

“Juventus didn’t understand the value of this player,” the former Bianconeri boss told Sky Sport Italia via Tuttosport.

“They treated him like a retiree, but he’s still top class. Szczesny shows impressive composure, and he’s a leader.”

Szczesny has played a key role in Barcelona’s excellent results this season as the Catalans are the La Liga leaders and will face Inter in the Champions League semifinals.
