Carabao Cup Draw: Chelsea & Xabi Alonso Learn Second Round Opponents

Chelsea have learned who they will face in the Carabao Cup second round as Xabi Alonso prepares to begin the Blues' domestic cup campaign.

After a 10th-placed finish in the Premier League and missing out on European football entirely for 2026-27, Chelsea enter the Carabao Cup in the earlier round of round two, rather than round three when the sides playing European football enter.

Following Monday's draw, Chelsea have been handed a tie against Luton Town, who are currently managed by Jack Wilshere, whose side booked their spot in the second round with a 3-0 win over Gillingham.

Alonso's side were only able to draw a southern-based side, with the first couple of rounds in the Carabao Cup regionalised.

They will now host the League One side at Stamford Bridge later this month for a place in the third round.

Chelsea have won the last five meetings in all competitions against Luton. The most recent victory came in December 2023 when the Blues won 3-2 at Kenilworth Road, with current attacker Cole Palmer bagging a brace.

Ties are due to take place on the week commencing August 24. Chelsea face Fulham in the Premier League on Monday, August 24, which will create a dilemma for the EFL over when to schedule the Blues' tie, given cup matches usually take place on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

In other confirmed ties, Newcastle face West Brom, whilst Tottenham have been handed a home tie against Charlton Athletic. Nottingham Forest versus Leeds United is an all-Premier League tie.

Newly promoted Ipswich Town host Leicester City, while Frank Lampard's Coventry City have been handed an away tie in Devon. Hull City will travel to Stoke City.
