Cardiff City fan pundit Matt Hall has told FLW he would like to see the club make a move for Southampton's Sam Edozie before the transfer deadline.

Cardiff City have been told to target Southampton winger Sam Edozie as they look to add more attacking quality to Brian Barry-Murphy’s squad.

The Bluebirds enjoyed a hugely successful first year under the Irishman, as they bounced back to the Championship at the first attempt. Not only that, but Barry-Murphy also implemented a clear way of playing, whilst he integrated many academy players into the first-team.

So, Cardiff look in a good position heading into the 2026/27 Championship season, and a 4-1 thrashing of AS Roma in a pre-season friendly has only increased the levels of optimism around the club.

However, one minor frustration is that the club could’ve done more business in the transfer window so far, as it’s clear they are lacking in certain departments.

Cardiff’s pursuit of Jens Hjerto-Dahl, and the subsequent signing of Jack Moylan, proves that it’s not a case of bringing in players for the sake of it, with the Welsh side only seeking individuals who will raise the level.

Therefore, the Bluebirds will be willing to wait for the right player, and it will be intriguing to see who else they do sign, following the addition of Moylan, who was hugely influential for Lincoln.

The Ireland international will add a lot to the attack, but, when asked by FLW for one player the club should target, Cardiff fan pundit Matt Hall explained that he feels more pace is needed in the final third, as he called on the club to go after Edozie, who has previously played for Barry-Murphy.

“Position wise, a new winger is the one I’m absolutely desperate for us to strengthen.

“One that comes to mind that I’ve wanted us to sign is Sam Edozie from Southampton. Obviously, I can go to the simple link between Barry-Murphy and Edozie as he was part of the Man City group that he coached growing up.

“I feel as a player and profile he fits exactly what we need. He’s like a 23-year-old version of Chris Willock who has got that pace in him, so I think he’s what we need as a winger.

“With one year left on his deal, Southampton may be looking to cash in, and he’s also a backup to Leo Scienza, who he maybe would’ve expected to have left. So, Edozie may want first-team football, and I thought he would be someone who is an open goal of a signing, so maybe I can manifest it into reality! But, Edozie is definitely one I’d be looking at.”

This would be a smart signing for Cardiff, and many fans would echo the view that Edozie is the profile of player that they need.

The 23-year-old was very highly-rated when he played for Man City, but he has struggled to find his best form on a consistent basis since he joined Southampton.

There have been flashes of his undoubted quality, with Edozie a fast, direct, unpredictable winger at his best, but he needs to find a club where he can show that regularly.

As outlined above, that may not happen at Saints, as Leo Scienza, who is arguably one of the best players in the league, is ahead of him.

With that in mind, a move may make sense for the sake of Edozie’s career, and the link with Barry-Murphy means this is a move that could suit all parties, as he will know how to get the best out of the winger, and the way that Cardiff play should highlight his qualities.
