Cardiff City have been linked with another loan move for Calum Scanlon

Cardiff City are set to compete with Sheffield Wednesday for the signing of Liverpool youngster Calum Scanlon.

According to The Athletic, the Championship side are keen to bring the 21-year-old back to the club after he spent the second half of last season on loan from the Reds.

The defender made eight appearances in League One for the Bluebirds, including two starts, helping the team finish second in the table and achieve automatic promotion.

Scanlon also previously went on loan to Millwall for a spell during 2024/25, where he made four appearances in the Championship.

And he could now be set for another temporary exit from Anfield, with a decision yet to be made on his future.

The youngster is not set to be part of Andoni Iraola’s first team plans, which has opened the door to another stint on loan this season.

It’s been claimed that Cardiff are keen on re-signing Scanlon for the upcoming campaign after his spell on loan last season.

However, Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked with the left-back, with Henrik Pedersen in the process of rebuilding his first team squad at Hillsborough.

The Owls are competing in League One, and have been quite active in the transfer market but have yet to bolster their options in that area of the pitch.

Cardiff will be able to offer Championship football to Scanlon, though it remains to be seen whether he would receive regular game time under Brian Barry-Murphy after playing on eight occasions in the third tier in 2025/26.

While the Welsh outfit are a division above Sheffield Wednesday, no front-runner has yet emerged in the race for his signature.

Both clubs have until 1 September to complete a deal to sign the Liverpool youngster before the market shuts.

Cardiff fans are mixed on the prospect of signing Scanlon again, suggesting that an upgrade is needed on Joel Bragan instead of a backup option.

Bluebirds supporters have suggested that this is a bottom of the barrel signing, indicating that more ambition needs to be shown in the market.

However, some fans are open to the prospect of bringing the defender back for another spell on loan.

And supporters are also willing to back Barry-Murphy, suggesting that if the manager wants him in then it would be a good idea.

Cardiff begin their Championship return with a home clash against Wrexham on 17 August.

Calum Scanlon loan back to Cardiff would make sense

Scanlon provided good cover and competition to Bragan in the second half of last season, so it would make sense for Cardiff to go back in for the defender.

However, Liverpool may want to prioritise a deal where the full-back will get a greater guarantee of game time.

That could hand Sheffield Wednesday the advantage in the race for his signature, as he would surely be further ahead in the pecking order at Hillsborough.
