The USA international joined the Bluebirds in February last year from Nottingham Forest, and he has had a mixed time in the Welsh capital.

Horvath hasn’t always been number one, making 33 appearances in that period, and just 17 of those came in the current campaign, which ended in relegation for Cardiff.

With Cardiff dropping to the third tier, a summer of change is anticipated, and several outgoings will be required as they look to balance the books to cope with their new financial reality.

And it appears Horvath could be on the move, as the Athletic journalist Larry Henry Jr revealed that there is an expectation the 29-year-old will secure a transfer in the window.

Ethan Horvath’s exclusion from the USMNT roster was a straight selective decision, per sources. Horvath is expected to leave Cardiff City this summer following the club’s relegation to League One. Veteran goalkeeper will be on the radar of several Championship clubs.”

Horvath has a contract with Cardiff that runs until the summer of 2027, and is said to be earning £15,000-a-week according to Capology estimates.

Cardiff City are gearing up for a huge summer

There’s understandably a lot of anger and frustration among the Cardiff fan base right now, as there’s no denying that they have underachieved this season.

Of course, the owner has to take responsibility for the bad decisions that have been made, particularly in terms of the manager and recruitment.

Now, it’s about addressing that, and it’s pivotal that they bring in the right manager to oversee this huge summer window.

Then, it’s about reshaping the squad, and it would be no surprise if Horvath did leave. With the US hosting the World Cup in 2026, he knows he will need to play regularly at the highest level if he is to make that squad, and Cardiff will free up some space and funds in the squad.

In truth, given his inconsistent displays, if Horvath does depart, Cardiff fans won’t be too bothered, and the focus will be on bringing in a new keeper for what they expect to be a promotion push next season.
