Carlos Baleba is set to have a Manchester United medical after Brighton and United agreed a deal for the midfielder.

The Athletic reported on 19 August that United were closing in with an offer of about £60m plus £5m in add-ons. Talks continued and the clubs have now agreed a £65m fixed fee, with add-ons taking it to £70m, and a sell-on clause.

The 22-year-old is expected to travel tonight ahead of a medical on Saturday. He has verbally agreed personal terms and is due to sign a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, subject to visa approval.

The Cameroon international is sidelined with an ankle ligament injury sustained in pre-season. He missed Brighton’s 0-0 draw with Tromso in the first leg of their Conference League qualifier on Thursday.

Midfield has been a summer priority for United after Casemiro left on a free and Manuel Ugarte suffered ligament damage at the World Cup. They have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £83m.

United tracked Baleba through 2025-26 after exploring a deal last summer. An April report said they maintained interest despite his underwhelming campaign, influenced by underlying data and displays from his first two seasons in England.

Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in summer 2023 and has made 112 appearances, with 23 Premier League starts last season. United face Hull City on Saturday in their opening Premier League match of the season.
