According to Globo.com, Carlos Miguel has become Palmeiras’ starter for 2026 after Weverton’s move to Grêmio.
The club’s costliest goalkeeping signing at about R$ 35 million, he had been favoured to take over this year. The call was simply brought forward, and he should start again on Saturday against Mirassol at 20:30 Brasília time in the third round of the Brasileirão.
Head coach Abel Ferreira, after Weverton’s exit, said the 27-year-old was a bet by the club’s president and that a sustained run was only a matter of time.
Miguel has played 14 times for Palmeiras, keeping nine clean sheets. In a 1-0 win over Santos he made two late saves to secure the result, later noting he was called on most at the end and pleased to help in a derby.
Signed last year, he would probably have finished 2025 as back-up, but Weverton’s hand injury removed the veteran from the run-in. Miguel impressed despite frustrating results, strengthening his claim to the role.
Palmeiras now have Miguel and Marcelo Lomba as senior options. Lomba is 39 and contracted to December, while Miguel is tied to 2030 and seen as the future. Weverton kept the shirt for eight seasons, after five years when Fernando Prass led the way.
The board do not plan to sign another goalkeeper now. Aranha will be third choice, the under-20 starter who, despite an error in normal time, saved the penalty that sent the team into the Copa São Paulo last 16.
