Carlos Soler returns to Mestalla on Sunday with Real Sociedad, four years after being sold by Peter Lim to PSG in summer 2022. It could be both a homecoming and a farewell, with this likely to be his last match at the old ground before the move to the new stadium in 2027 unless the Copa del Rey says otherwise.
"I am coming home. Playing again at Mestalla is very important to me. I watched their win over Alavés and I wish them the best, except this weekend, when I hope we win," said Soler, speaking to Superdeporte.
"It is a shame to think this will be its last year because I think it is an incredible ground. People outside Valencia say wonderful things about it, the vertical stands, the power when the whole stadium roars. I hope it is a very special year for Mestalla."
He has had this date in mind for a year. "I hope I can play there next year," he said in April. Injuries have stayed away, and if coach Pellegrino Matarazzo deems it appropriate, he is in line to start as a visiting player for the first and last time.
It is set to be his last appearance on the pitch at Mestalla, not in the stands. If his schedule allows, he plans to return before season’s end as another Valencia fan.
