Michael Carrick says Luke Shaw remains a doubt for Manchester United’s derby clash with Manchester City after the defender was not risked in their midweek game against Sabah.

Shaw was not deemed fully fit for the game and United will assess his condition over the coming days before deciding whether he can feature against City.

“We’ll have to see,” Carrick said. “We just looked after him going into tonight, he wasn’t quite ready at 100 per cent so we didn’t risk it.

“We’ll see how he is over the next couple of days.”

There was more positive news on Marcus Rashford, who was rested against Sabah after being taken off during United’s 2-2 draw with Everton with a minor fitness concern.

Carrick confirmed Rashford’s absence was partly precautionary but also an opportunity to manage his workload ahead of the derby.

“A little bit of that, yeah, and trying to share the load a little bit,” he explained.

“We’ve got good options so we’re trying to keep everyone fresh. It was nice to keep him fresh for the weekend.”
