United without first choice left-back on return to Champions League

Luke Shaw is not involved for Manchester United against Sabah FK tonight, with the left-back’s fitness being managed.

Shaw emerged as a doubt for United’s first league phase fixture in this season’s Champions League after missing training on Wednesday morning.

Asked for an update on Shaw, Michael Carrick moved to allay fears of a serious fitness concern, telling reporters: "We just gave him an extra recovery day so we'll see by tomorrow how he is, but it's not an ongoing thing or a plan.

“It's normal each individual has different things that we manage."

Just over an hour before kick-off at Old Trafford, it was announced that the 31-year-old had been left out of the matchday squad for the showdown with competition debutants Sabah.

It is not known yet whether Shaw will be available for Man United’s showdown against rivals Manchester City at the weekend, but Carrick is hopeful.

Explaining Shaw’s absence when speaking to TNT Sports, Carrick said: “He come off the other day with a little bit of cramp so we did not want to take any risks really.

In Shaw’s place, Patrick Dorgu comes into a Man United defence that shows three changes from the 2-2 draw with Everton at the weekend.

Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro are also drafted in as Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot drop down to the bench, perhaps with one eye on the Man City game.

The fourth and final change is in attack as Benjamin Sesko is rewarded for his late goal at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, he replaces Marcus Rashford which should signal a return to the left-wing for Matheus Cunha.
