Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has said he was pleased with how ‘dangerous’ his team looked during the club’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa.
United secured their seventh win in nine games under Carrick to move three points above Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.
Casemiro headed the home side in front at Old Trafford, before Ross Barkley – making his first Premier League start in more than a year – levelled for Aston Villa.
United remained threatening and got their reward when Matheus Cunha converted past Emi Martinez, after a slide-rule pass from Bruno Fernandes.
The latter’s brace of assists, having set up Casemiro’s opener, took him to 16 in the Premier League this season, a club-record for Manchester United. Benjamin Sesko sealed the win late on after reacting quickest to a loose ball in the box.
Carrick’s side are now in pole position for Champions League football with the argument for the interim manager to get the permanent post growing.
“I was pretty happy with a lot of things. We looked a good team,” he said, speaking to Match of the Day.
“Credit to them, they had a couple of spells in the game but for the most part we were dangerous. It was a big game coming off the defeat. The boys reacted incredibly well.”
“Two good teams. It’s not always going to be all guns blazing, edge-of-your-seat stuff. We were in a good place at half-time and wanted a little bit more. We knew we were capable of it and the boys were fantastic to finish it off.
“We can enjoy winning. It’s a good feeling and something we want to keep getting used to. We are keeping a lid on it and understanding where we are and what it takes to win games like today. We are in a good position at the moment but still a lot to play.”
