Manchester United crashed to a 0-1 defeat to Everton on Monday, despite the Toffees playing with a man disadvantage for over 80 minutes.

It once again showed the lack of quality in the squad, with Ruben Amorim being without two key attackers for the contest. Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha missed the game, with the Slovenian out for a month.

Add Harry Maguire’s injury, and the impending departures of Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui to the mix, and United’s campaign could derail before the year ends.

Casemiro, who has been a crucial cog in the wheel, picked up his fourth yellow card of the season against David Moyes’ side.

As per Premier League rules, five cautions within the first 19 league games means an automatic one-game suspension.

With key contests against West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Bournemouth to follow next weekend’s Crystal Palace tie, the head coach can ill afford to be without his midfield warrior.

The 20-time English league champions already have issues in the middle of the park, with Amorim crying out for more quality.

He had demanded INEOS to sign more options, but no signings materialised in the summer. On current evidence, January deals also look unlikely.

United cannot afford to lose him even for one game

Apart from the five-time Champions League winner, the Red Devils only have Manuel Ugarte capable of playing in front of the backline.

And the Uruguayan’s form has been nothing to write home about. Kobbie Mainoo is not considered good enough to play as a No.6 by the head coach.

In other words, Casemiro is walking a tightrope and needs to be extra careful. Whether Amorim takes him out of the firing line or whether he offers strict instructions will be interesting to see.

His current deal ends next summer, with INEOS locked in talks over a new deal on reduced wages. He is attracting interest from all over, and is free to agree a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.
