CD Castellón marked AD Ceuta’s visit by expressing solidarity with the autonomous city, which is still dealing with the aftermath of last summer’s migrant influx.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, spontaneous applause greeted Ceuta as they came out to warm up. Before kick-off, a message of support was played over the public address, the Spanish flag appeared on the big screen, and the home players emerged in supportive shirts.
A banner was displayed in Gol Sur and chants echoed in the same spirit.
Ceuta’s squad included several former Castellón players, with Koné and Bodiger named in the travelling party. Koné, applauded by the crowd, spoke with home player Israel Suero before kick-off, the pair having shared half a season in 2022/23.
In the directors’ box, city mayor Begoña Carrasco was a notable presence. The magician Yunke was also spotted in the stands.
The build-up also featured a clutch of reserve-team youngsters after nine absences for Castellón, namely Camara, Castillo, Nieto, Brignani, Vlak, Maty Orozco, Saipi, Rego and Mellot. Willmann, Óscar Albiol, Miguelón and Axel Pérez made the list but did not play.
Half-time brought the debut of the Pam, pam cam, akin to a kiss cam but showcasing ears, and it went down well.
