The most recent Castellón v Ceuta at SkyFi Castalia finished 3-3 little more than a year ago. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, it already feels far removed from the club’s current state.
That night effectively ended Johan Plat’s tenure. The Dutch coach, now at SC Cambuur in the Eredivisie, was dismissed after five winless league matches. Sent off in Córdoba a week earlier, he watched from the directors’ box, with Pablo Hernández nearby before replacing him.
It was matchday five, the debut of Romain Matthys, now an undisputed starter in goal. Agustín Sienra opened his account, celebrating to make amends for an earlier error that led to Ceuta’s first.
The evening was defined by collective anxiety from pitch to stands. A visiting red card after 2-3 averted defeat, as Álex Calatrava struck and Israel Suero levelled from the spot in stoppage time.
The only previous meeting in Primera RFEF also ended all square, 2-2. Ceuta, already led by current coach José Juan Romero, held Dick Schreuder’s Castellón, who later clinched direct promotion. Moyita and Raúl Sánchez scored for the albinegros.
Across all visits, AD Ceuta FC have played at Castalia eight times. Beyond those two, the other six were, bar one in the cup, Segunda fixtures in the last century. Castellón have won four, including two in the 1960s against then Atlético Ceuta.
In 1967, Castellón won 5-1, through Palacios, Cela, a Folch brace and a Rivas own goal. The following year brought a 3-1 victory, courtesy of Búa, Juanito and Etxabe.
