CBF approves gradual reduction of foreign player limit and standardised Brasileirão schedule | OneFootball

The CBF has approved a phased cut to foreign players on team sheets and a standardised schedule for Série A and Série B after a Rio meeting with clubs and state federations, according to Diario Do Peixe. The foreigner plan drew only two votes against, while the schedule changes passed unanimously.

Findings presented to clubs showed the top flight’s average age rising from 27.3 in 2021 to 28.5 in 2026, with under-23s down to 13.8% of minutes, compared with 28% to 38% in major European leagues.

The matchday cap will fall from nine to eight in 2027, then seven in 2028, six in 2029 and five in 2030. The current average is five point four foreign players listed per game across 219 matches analysed.

Clubs will still register up to 50 players, split between List A for over-23s and List B for under-23s, with no homegrown requirement. The split progresses from 30 and 20 in 2027 to 25 and 25 in 2030.

Kick-offs will be consolidated, removing weekday 19:00 and Sunday night slots and reducing overlap between divisions. Série A will concentrate on Sundays with 16:00 as anchor and stage six Wednesday fixtures in the Super Quarta, while Série B’s main day becomes Saturday with three 18:00 matches and midweek slots at 19:30 and 21:00 from Tuesday to Thursday.
