CBF approves phased foreigner cap and new kick-off grid for Série A and B | OneFootball

The Brazilian Football Confederation held its fourth meeting with Série A and B clubs in Rio on Monday 21, approving reforms to player registration and kick-off times.

According to Coluna Do Fla, clubs and state federations backed five measures: a phased reduction of foreign players on matchday lists, two age-based registration lists, rebalanced over- and under-23 quotas, standardised schedules in both divisions, and the removal of Sunday night and 19:00 midweek slots.

The foreigner limit, now nine, will fall to eight in 2027, seven in 2028, six in 2029 and five in 2030, part of a drive to create room for younger Brazilian talent.

Squad registration stays capped at 50 per club, split into List A for over-23s and List B for under-23s. The split will shift to 30/20 in 2027, 29/21 in 2028, 27/23 in 2029, then 25 each in 2030.

A new broadcast grid aims to curb the proliferation of kick-off combinations that saw Série A use 51 and Série B 81 between 2023 and 2025, giving each competition a clearer identity.

In Série A, Sundays will host most weekend matches, with 16:00 the main slot. Wednesdays take midweek focus under Super Quarta, concentrating six fixtures on the same day.

Série B will pivot to Saturdays, anchored by three games at 18:00, and gain four windows exclusive from Série A. Midweek B fixtures will run at 19:30 and 21:00 from Tuesday to Thursday. Rollout begins in 2027 for roster rules, with scheduling applied as competitions are planned.
