CBF foreign-player cap cut to reshape Grêmio renewals and squad planning | OneFootball

A new CBF rule, approved by Série A and B clubs last week, will reduce the foreign player cap from nine to eight per match in 2027, then to five by 2030. It directly affects Grêmio’s medium-term plans.

According to Globo.com, Grêmio currently have 10 foreigners in the squad, with Kannemann now naturalised and no longer counting towards the quota.

Two, Amuzu and Pavon, are out of contract in December 2026. The other eight hold longer deals, so exits would depend on a termination, sale or loan.

Renewal talks began in recent months but slowed amid the team’s Brasileirão struggles, and the new rule is another factor. Seventeenth in the table, Grêmio are fighting relegation, which directly clouds revenue forecasts for 2027.

Financial uncertainty has deepened with the betting ban. The club’s main shirt sponsor is from that sector, and since the last window the board has pursued a leaner wage policy. Amuzu’s salary is viewed internally as high and would be revised in any new deal.

The switch of head coach from Luís Castro to Renato has also altered planning. Meanwhile, Brazilian forward Carlos Vinicius, whose deal runs to the end of 2026, was offered two more years to 2028 in July and the club awaited a response. There is no confirmed progress, though both sides point to a good relationship.

Among the other foreigners, Balbuena is contracted to June 2027, Braithwaite and Jovane Cabral to December 2027, Enamorado, Krovinovic and Noriega to December 2028, and Nardoni and Villasanti to December 2029.
