CD Tenerife’s Maikel Mesa has been sentenced to eight months in prison for atentado and an injuries offence, after his arrest over an altercation in La Laguna on Sunday. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday at a fast-track hearing.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the court imposed eight months for the atentado count and a two-month fine at a rate of 10 euros, plus another two-month fine for the injuries offence, totalling 1,200 euros.
On Sunday near Plaza de La Concepción, Mesa and two others reportedly mocked a man by calling him bald. When he challenged them, they are said to have cornered him and landed several blows.
The group then moved towards a nearby car park, the victim followed and alerted police. As he tried to stop them driving off, one occupant got out and took his phone.
Officers from the National Police’s Grupo Operativo de Respuesta and La Laguna’s local police attended. They advised the victim to obtain a medical report and file a complaint, and his information proved key to identifying the footballer.
Local police images and vehicle number plates allowed officers to identify Maikel Mesa and locate him at his mother’s home, where injuries on his knuckles were noted as consistent with an assault. The player also confirmed they had taken the victim’s phone and where it had been thrown.
