Ceferino Díaz, the former midfielder and a standard-bearer of Olimpo de Bahía Blanca’s historic rise to Argentina’s Primera División in 2001, has died aged 53.

According to SuperDepor.com, Díaz was among Gustavo Alfaro’s first captains at the club and became a cornerstone of one of its most celebrated sides.

He is especially remembered for the day promotion was clinched, scoring twice in a 4-0 win over Instituto de Córdoba. The result sealed the 2001/02 Torneo Nacional B title and delivered Olimpo’s first ever promotion to the top flight.

Under Alfaro, Olimpo set a benchmark for the era, with Díaz a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch, valued for his experience and influence.

Born in Juan N. Fernández in the Necochea district of Buenos Aires province, he enjoyed a professional career spanning more than two decades. His journey included a spell abroad with Deportivo Quito in Ecuador before returning to continue in Argentina.

Clubs and institutions across Bahía Blanca and the south of the province offered condolences and paid tribute to his career. His name remains inextricably linked to Olimpo and the campaign that reshaped the club’s sporting history.
