Celtic transfer target Cho Gue-Sung fits the ‘type of player’ who the Hoops are reportedly eager to sign, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 24-year-old starred for South Korea at the World Cup as they reached the last 16 for the first time since 2010 and has been linked with a move away from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors as a result.

Celtic transfer news – Cho Gue-Sung

A recent report from the Scottish Sun claimed that Celtic have ‘joined the race’ for Cho Gue-Sung who is attracting interest from several clubs across the continent.

South Korea FA vice-president Lee Young-pyo also confirmed the 6 foot 2 striker has caught the eye of European suitors.

“After the first game against Uruguay, the technical director of a very good club in Europe contacted me about a scout report for Cho Gue-sung,” admitted Lee Young-pyo (via K-League United).

Cho Gue-Sung registered 21 goals and five assists in 35 games in all competitions for Jeonbuk and army team Gimcheon Sangmu last season.

The clinical forward had moved there on loan to complete his mandatory military service before returning to his parent club for the second half of the campaign.

What has Jones said about Cho Gue-Sung?

Celtic currently have Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis battling it out for a starting berth upfront.

Yet Jones has informed GiveMeSport that Cho Gue-Sung fits the profile of player that manager Ange Postecoglou is believed to be keen to bring into the club when the market re-opens for business.

“I think Cho Gue-Sung really does actually fit the type of player I’ve been told to look out for here in terms of a potential signing, and so I think that is a really interesting link.”

How did Cho Gue-Sung play at the World Cup?

Cho Gue-Sung had to settle for a place on the bench for South Korea’s first World Cup encounter against Uruguay, but he did come off the bench for the final 15 minutes or so.

He was then rewarded with a start in the subsequent fixture against Ghana where he certainly made an impression, bagging a memorable headed brace in an entertaining 3-2 defeat.

Cho Gue-Sung then featured from the off once more as South Korea saw off Portugal to progress from Group H, although he couldn’t prevent their exit to Brazil at the last 16.

As per WhoScored, the striker did win 5.3 aerial duels and take 2.3 shots per game at the World Cup, though, placing him in the top two for both metrics when compared to his teammates.
