Celtic interim chairman Brian Wilson has promised that manager Martin O’Neill will be given funds to be “very active” in the summer transfer window.

O’Neill has signed a one-year deal after his successful stint as interim manager, with the 74-year-old returning to the club and leading Celtic to a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

Celtic are now ready to back the manager, with Wilson insisting funds are available to strengthen the squad.

Asked if O’Neill will have resources to spend this summer, Wilson told a club interview that he expects Celtic to be busy in the upcoming window.

“Absolutely, and that is very much part of the basis on which he’s wanted to come back and we’ve wanted him to come back.

“It’s going to be a very active next few weeks, and we must come out of it with a stronger squad. It’s worth mentioning maybe for all the criticisms last year, that eight of our players are at the World Cup.

“We had a lot of very, very good players, so we want to not only retain that strength but also to build on it.”
