This afternoon Celtic can win the first domestic honour on offer this campaign, as we take on St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final at Hampden. If we are successful this would mark the 121st major honour in the club’s history.

Celtic are Scotland’s premier club,  we are the country’s most successful club, and winning honours is what we do better than all the rest. Today, god willing, will be another one of those magical moments that sees us lift yet more silverware in a trophy laden era, one that we should all be ever so grateful to be a part of.

In terms of the Premier Sports Cup, a win today would secure our 23rd success in the tournament, a tournament in which we’ve tasted some great success, the most iconic being the 7-1 oh Hampden in the sun thumping over Rangers in 1957.

Hampden in the Sun – Celtic 7 Rangers 1

At one point though it was a tournament that was one of the bogey variety. After a memorable 2-1 win over Rangers at a rain soaked Hampden in 1982, it was another 15 years before he held aloft the trophy again, ironically at Ibrox after a 3-0 win over Dundee United to secure Wim Jansens first trophy as manager. And three years later we were victorious at Hampden once again as we beat Aberdeen 2-0 to win the clubs first honour of the new century.

Since then we’ve won the trophy on eleven occasions, including eight of the last eleven on offer, a quite impressive record, it must be said. Some claim that this is the ‘lesser’ of the major domestic honours, but that is total nonsense, it’s a trophy after all, and gives us yet another shot at a dream treble.

We of course are the holders after defeating theRangers in a dramatic penalty shootout this time last year, so we will be doing everything we can to retain the trophy and add to our already impressive list of ever growing honours.
