Celtic Invincible Stuart Armstrong is set to return to English football after a stint in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps. The Scottish Internationalist will sign for Sheffield Wednesday as he looks to put himself back into Steve Clarke’s plans ahead of the UEFA Nations League meeting with Greece.
Armstrong was released by Southampton after failing to agree new terms following their promotion to the Premier League. Despite being included in Scotland’s Euros squad, the player remained a free agent and made the surprise switch to the MLS.
Celtic sold Armstrong in the summer of 2018 in a deal worth in excess of £7m. The departure was inevitable as Armstrong clearly wanted to have a crack at the Premier League.
Armstrong was a top player for Celtic, really kicking on under Brendan Rodgers and helping Celtic towards a Double Treble. After signing alongside Gary Mackay-Steven, Armstrong went onto make 144 appearances for Celtic, scoring 28 times and racking up 25 assists.
Hopefully it is a successful move for Armstrong and the Hillsborough support can adopt the Celtic song for him.
