Celtic Keeping Close Tabs On This Swedish Goalkeeper: Should O’Neill Sanction The Move? | OneFootball

If a recent report from the Swedish outlet Expressen (as cited by The Scottish Sun) is believed to be true, Celtic are keeping close tabs on Leo Cavallius ahead of a potential summer move. But they are not alone in the race, with Serie A side Parma also plotting a move for the IF Brommapojkarna custodian after losing Zion Suzuki.

The 21-year-old Swedish shot-stopper progressed through the Bromma Boys and IFK Stocksund’s academy ranks before breaking into the latter’s first-team squad in the third division. Brommapojkarna re-signed him in August 2024 but loaned him out to IFK Stocksund a year later for regular football.

Why A Deal Could Prove Complicated For Celtic

Cavallius returned to Brommapojkarna and eventually grabbed a first-team spot in Allsvenskan earlier this season. He has since featured in 16 consecutive games, conceding 26 goals, with the Stockholm-based outfit battling for survival in the top flight. However, his shot-Stopping consistency, mobility and movement tick the boxes of a modern-day sweeper-keeper, and the Hoops, currently relying on Viljami Sinisalo between the sticks, is exploring a deal for the youngster.

But it won’t be a straightforward deal for Celtic, as they must splash a significant fee to secure his services. Cavallius is under contract at Grimsta IP until the end of 2028, and the Bromma Boys, stuck at the wrong end of the league standings, need him in goal to escape relegation.

Although the Swedish side are under no compulsion to sell their prized asset, no player is truly untouchable, particularly when a bid becomes astronomically high. A significant offer could prompt Brommapojkarna to change their stance, as it would allow them to bolster their entire squad.

The Celts have prioritised high-profile veterans to provide immediate leadership and stability to bridge short-term needs in recent years. Kasper Schmeichel was a like-for-like replacement for Joe Hart after the Englishman retired from professional football. But a shoulder injury sustained earlier this year forced the veteran Dane to hang up his gloves. Sinisalo grabbed his opportunities en route to their dramatic Premiership triumph, and his emergence in the last line of defence has been rewarded with the ‘number 1′ status.

The rumoured interest in Cavallius demonstrates Celtic’s change in transfer policy while recruiting a keeper. With Ross Doohan viewed as the third choice, the Brommapojkarna prospect would challenge and cover Sinisalo rather than replace him between the posts. A host of goalkeepers are under the Bhoys’ radar, and it remains to be seen whether they prioritise him over the others before the summer window is slammed shut.
