Currently sitting third in the SWPL table, Celtic are six points behind league leaders Glasgow City and if they are to have any aspirations of being serious title challengers this season, these are games the Hoops have to win.
The challenge for Sadiku is that her side must now deliver on the pitch. There are no distractions of Champions League football this season that the Swedish boss can use as an excuse.
Celtic haven’t defeated theRangers since March 2024 – a run of eight matches in all competitions – and their failure to overcome their rivals significantly harmed their title hopes last season.
Glasgow City, Hibs and the latest Ibrox club have each posed major hurdles for Celtic so far this campaign, and Sadiku recognises that the longer they go without beating their title rivals, the heavier the pressure grows. A statement win is required, and the 32 year-old Hoops boss has acknowledged that.
Speaking to The Celtic Star at yesterday’s media conference at Celtic Park, Sadiku said: “I have been dealing with pressure all my life. I have played in the Champions League, coached in the Champions League, win titles, won trophies. It is where you want to be.”
“The way I deal with pressure is to give everything I have every single day. The belief in this game is stronger than tactics. We know what it means and playing theRangers is the most exciting part of being in this league. We need to show desire, passion, how much we want it.”
Although Celtic have found it difficult to beat theRangers over the past 20 months, Sadiku maintains that the pressure rests on Leanne Crichton’s side this evening. She was fully aware that a victory would move Celtic six points ahead of their rivals.
“The bigger pressure is on theRangers because they are behind us,” she said. “I’m not hiding from the fact it has been so long since we won against theRangers but the games have been close. I want us to be on the other side of it this time.”
