Among the flurry of arrivals at Celtic Park in the last hours of transfer deadline was Feyenoord right back Jordan Lotomba

The Swiss international signed a deal until the end of the season as Martin O’Neill swooped to strengthen the right back area in the midst of Alistair Johnston’s injury which will rule him out the Canadian international for up to eight weeks.

Some interesting news has since emerged, with it being claimed that Celtic turned down a loan transfer opportunity to sign Bayern Munich right back Sacha Boey.

The Bundesliga Champions were ‘open’ to talks with Celtic for their defender but the club opted for Lotomba instead – who subsequently signed on a season-long deal from Dutch side Feyenoord.

Swiss international Lotomba, 27, joined Celtic on 2nd September, which was effectively the club’s deadline day given their European squad submission requirements. Business officially concluded for Scottish teams the following day.

Former French youth international Boey is a player Celtic had previously shown an interest in back in 2021 whilst he was playing for Rennes, however the full-back decided to move to Galatasaray instead.

According to Mark Hendry writing via Celts are Here: “It is understood Celtic did speak with representation regarding the defender and had made it clear how much of his salary they were willing to pay.

And we understand Bayern would have had to eat a loss of around £2.7million, which they were willing to do. Ultimately, when it came down to the final decision, Celtic opted to go in a different direction.”

Such a claim will turn heads among the Celtic supporters, as Boey is clearly a player with real quality, having cost Bayern €30 million back in 2024, albeit he’s struggled to get regular game time, which resulted in the 25 year old returning to Galatasaray on a loan deal in the second half of last season.

Celtic however decided to pursue a deal with Swiss international Lotomba which hopefully is an indication that he too is going to be a top quality addition having beaten Boey to the chance to wear the hoops.
