Celtic will visit the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on Thursday evening in the match of the UEFA Europa League group phase as they face Bologna.

The Glasgow giants have emerged from a bleak spell under short-term boss Wilfried Nancy, a period in which they slumped to six defeats in eight outings, to find renewed momentum since Martin O’Neill stepped back into the technical area on 5 January.

Under the Irishman, Celtic have strung together three wins on the bounce. That run includes a 4-0 win against Dundee United and a 2-0 victory over Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Cup, the latter achieved despite O’Neill ringing the changes with ten alterations to his starting XI.

Even with this resurgence, their Europa League journey has yet to fully reflect the upturn in performance. Celtic sit 24th in the league-phase standings with only seven points from six games. The Scottish champions are narrowly ahead of Dinamo Zagreb in 25th on goal difference, and they can not afford further slip-ups in their remaining two fixtures if they are to secure a place inside the top 24.

Celtic team news

Alistair Johnston, Callum Osmand and Cameron Carter-Vickers are all still sidelined, with Johnston eyeing a possible comeback in March as he continues his rehabilitation.

In attack, Portuguese winger Jota has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign following a cruciate ligament injury while forward Kelechi Iheanacho and full-back Marcelo Saracchi are also unavailable for selection.

With rotation no longer an option in such an important European tie, Celtic are expected to field as close to their strongest side as possible. Kasper Schmeichel is tipped to reclaim his place between the posts, shielded by a back four of Julian Araujo, Auston Trusty, Liam Scales and Kieran Tierney.

Higher up the pitch, Sebastian Tounekti, Hyun-Jun Yang and Daizen Maeda are all likely to be restored to the starting lineup after being rested for the weekend cup win over Auchinleck Talbot.

Celtic predicted lineup

Possible Celtic starting XI: Schmeichel; Araujo, Trusty, Scales, Tierney; Engels, McGregor, Hatate; Yang, Maeda, Tounekti.

When will the match kick off?

The match will kick off at 5:45pm BST on Wednesday, 21st January.
