Alongside watching homegrown players rise to the first team, fans of Celtic get a great deal of satisfaction from watching a relatively unknown player become a key cog in the Scottish giants’ wheel. From Lubomir Moravcik to Henrik Larsson, the club has snapped up some fantastic foreign talents over the years.
However, while not every American has delivered match-winning performances, it’s a nation that has also contributed to Celtic’s rich history. A country where shooting hoops and making it in the NBA is a preference for many budding sports stars, while fans also typically watch the NFL and enjoy Super Bowl game betting, for America to have a number of players associated with one of the biggest clubs around is quite remarkable.
These same players have faced numerous barriers throughout their careers, especially when factoring in the lack of football infrastructure in the country. However, they still managed to make it in football. With all that in mind, below we salute some of Celtic’s American contingent from over the years.

While we’re predominantly focusing on players from the United States of America who used to play for the club, there are two important Americans who are there today. One of them is Cameron Carter-Vickers, a player the team are undoubtedly missing after the centre-back ruptured his achilles tendon in late October. While his season is sadly over, his American compatriot, Auston Trusty, is currently standing in. The former Sheffield United defender is a commanding presence who has played in the Premier League, and his mentality is admired by many Celtic fans. Having played for the likes of Philadelphia Union and Colorado Rapids, Trusty is clearly enjoying his time at Celtic.

Timothy Weah is an American attacker many Celtic fans will remember. The on-loan Marseille star is officially on the books of Italian giants Juventus, although he has ultimately failed at The Old Lady and has been forced to search for more minutes in Ligue 1 with the French club. The son of former FIFA Player of the Year George Weah, the now-25-year-old scored 3 goals in 13 appearances for the club in 2013 and showed glimpses of his potential in the Scottish top flight.

Of course, not every American footballer necessarily adapted to life in Scotland and the level of football on offer. Manny Perez is a youngster who fits the bill in that respect, although he has managed to forge a successful career for himself in American soccer despite failing to make it at Celtic. The now-26-year-old signed for Celtic in 2019, but he didn’t make a single first team appearance. Still, the defender clearly learned a great deal during his time with the Scottish behemoths.

Similar in many respects to Manny Perez, Andrew Gutman also joined the club in 2019 with big potential as project signing. However, numerous issues got in the way, resulting in the left-back returning home on loan with the likes of Charlotte Independence and FC Cincinnati. Currently on the books of the Chicago Fire, Andrew Gutman has gone on to have a solid career in the MLS.

Dominic Cervi, a back-up goalkeeper who never made an appearance for the club, is the final player on the list. Now retired from the sport, he was with the club between 2008 and 2012, joining Dundee and Greenock Morton on loan.
