Celtic’s new all American centre-back pairing tough on faultless Scales

No doubts about it, Auston is CCV’s new first choice partner. You can’t help but feel sorry for Liam Scales, but it gives our defence much more strength and depth…

£6 million is a hefty sum for Celtic to spend

Auston Trusty was signed for a big fee in the summer. £6 million is a hefty sum for Celtic to spend on a player and having parted with that significant sum the player was always going to be given his chance to establish himself in the team

That fee roughly matches the sum that we parted with for Cameron Carter Vickers, so it’s not a surprise that Trusty is now Brendan’s first choice partner alongside his fellow American international in the centre of the defence. As things stand anyway.

Trusty colossal against the Bundesliga side

After starting the semi final win over Aberdeen and the Champions league win over Leipzig, there can be no doubts that Auston is now in command of that starting place in the left hand side of the central defence. He was a colossal against the Bundesliga side and looked very comfortable at this level, just as he did against Atalanta.

It’s of course helped him by moving to his preferred left sided position, and he’s thrived with that starting spot now his to lose.

Scales has done nothing wrong

Unfortunately that mean Liam Scales misses out, and you’ve got to feel sorry for him as he’s done nothing wrong, but Trusty looks the real deal, and with his transfer fee, he wasn’t exactly coming to sit on the bench. Brendan mentioned Trusty’s pace and that is something that any defence is going to need at Champions League level.

Although it’s a pity for Liam, it gives us great strength at depth at the back, something we’ve lacked for a while. Liam came on for CCV in the win against Leipzig and didn’t looked phased, and why should he as he’s already shone at this level.

Steven Welsh and Maik Nawrocki

With CCV also being prone to injury, it’s good to have Liam to call upon. Last season going into a game without the big strong man was unthinkable, but having two other reliable centre backs gives us much more depth that we needn’t worry.

It’s two from three at the moment and there seems little prospect of that changing anytime soon with the likes of Steven Welsh and Maik Nawrocki unlikely to see much action for the foreseeable.

For Sunday’s trip to Rugby Park on that dreadful plastic pitch, don’t be surprised if CCV is on the bench and Trusty and Scales both start. As was mentioned on The Celtic Star yesterday the plastic pitch is set to stay for another season after Kilmarnock’s plans to rip it up this summer has been frustrated by building work delays at their new training facility.
