Cerro Porteño are exploring a move for Vasco striker Pablo Vegetti, last season’s leading scorer in Brazil. The Paraguayan club have stepped up approaches to his camp since the start of the week.

There has been no formal contact with Vasco so far, with talks conducted with the player’s representatives. The club’s sporting director, Enrique Biedermann, said the interest is real and described negotiations as difficult but not impossible.

Unable to match his Rio de Janeiro salary, Cerro Porteño aim to tempt the 37-year-old with security on term, even at a lower wage. The plan is for a deal of three years or more.

Vegetti is under contract at Vasco until the end of 2026. He has scored 60 goals across the past three seasons in Brazil and was Vasco’s top scorer in 2025 with 27 in 65 appearances, though he finished the campaign as a substitute.

Head coach Fernando Diniz has asked for a more mobile forward to fit his style. Brenner of Udinese was sounded out, but that option did not progress because the Italians are not currently open to a loan.

Finances weigh on any decision. Vegetti is among the club’s highest earners, so the board would listen to a proposal, but they will not force out a player valued internally. He remains popular with fans, is a dressing-room leader, and has reported for pre-season.
