Champions League title? Former Bayern manager expresses skepticism

FC Bayern has big ambitions for the new season. Domestically, the goal is once again to achieve the maximum—that is, to win as many titles as possible. The Champions League is also a factor. However, a former FCB manager is skeptical about the team’s chances of winning the title.

Last season, FC Bayern wasn’t all that far off. Their run ended in the semifinals against PSG (4–5, 1–1); prior to that, they had knocked Real Madrid out of the competition and celebrated victories over teams like Chelsea FC.

With new stars like Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, the team is set to go on the offensive again this season. In addition, Vincent Kompany, Bayern’s coach, still sees potential in his squad.

Will Bayern win the Champions League? Reschke is skeptical

Michael Reschke, who served as technical director at FC Bayern from 2014 to 2017, views the record champions’ ambitions in the Champions League with a certain degree of skepticism.

When asked whether FC Bayern can keep up with the absolute top clubs in the Champions League in the long run, Reschke told the TZ: “Of course FCB can win the Champions League. And the probability of that is between ten and 15 percent.” By extension, that means a lot of things would have to go right for Kompany’s team for that to be realistic.

Reschke added, however: “Well, there are six to eight international heavyweights that all have more or less the same chance. And today, no one knows which of these clubs will have its best players fit and in good form in April and May—and will also have that little bit of luck.”

Within the limits of their own capabilities, though, the former Bayern manager sees the team as quite well-positioned and well-prepared. According to Reschke, “the foundation has been laid,” but good and smart decisions are needed time and again. These are essential to maintaining the highest level of play.
