For Manuel Neuer, a season is beginning that could be his last as a professional. Although the FC Bayern captain has not yet made a final decision about retiring, he still has the highest aspirations on the field. Above all, Neuer wants to compete for the top spot once again with the Munich team in the Champions League.

In an interview with Sky, the 40-year-old made it clear that he believes the current Bayern team is capable of winning the Champions League. When asked whether a major triumph under coach Vincent Kompany was possible, Neuer replied unequivocally: “Absolutely.”

The goalkeeper believes the Munich team is fundamentally capable of prevailing against any opponent in Europe. “We’ve always had the chance to reach the final. We’ve always been close with our team,” Neuer explained.

For the Bayern captain, it’s not just the individual quality of the roster that matters. The team’s mentality and tactical development under Kompany also give him confidence.

“I believe we have the quality, the mentality, and the tactical spirit to beat any opponent,” Neuer emphasized.

In his view, in recent years, FC Bayern has been missing only minor details to advance further in the Champions League. That’s why Neuer hopes this next attempt will be successful all the way to the end: “We weren’t far off from advancing, and I think maybe all good things come in threes this time—and we’re working on it.”



For Neuer, another triumph in the Champions League would be a special achievement. He already won the Champions League with FC Bayern in 2013 and 2020. Now, in what may be the final phase of his extraordinary career, he could once again reach for Europe’s most prestigious club trophy.

Neuer attributes his ability to continue playing at the highest level even at age 40 primarily to his professional approach to taking care of his body. After more than two decades in professional soccer, he says many small details make all the difference.

“Ultimately, it really matters how you live your life and how you prepare yourself to still be in the game even after more than 20 years as a pro. It really comes down to how you eat, how you sleep, and when you need to give yourself a break,” explained the Bayern goalkeeper.
