Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes has made an honest admission of being surprised with the club's points and status in the Premier League.

How about being asked the number of European club trophy winners at Southampton currently? Well, honestly, very few would be able to name other than club legend Adam Lallana.

But, he's not the only one.

Just, imagine being a Conference League winner in the 2022/23 season and a year later, nobody cares about it. Well, that's probably, because you opted for a new project at a relegation-battling club like Southampton.

At this point, you might have understood the name. Yes, we are talking about Flynn Downes.

In just a year and a half, Downes has experienced stark contrasts in the Premier League. However, it wasn't always tough for him.

In his initial loan spell for Southampton, Downes was one of the promotion heroes under Russell Martin. Even this season, he had been brilliant initially, but the change of managers hasn't been smooth for him.

If this wasn't enough, Southampton's misery in the Premier League campaign adds to the turmoil.

Recently, Downes himself admitted that he didn't expect their condition to be this bad. As per the Daily Echo, Downes said: "I didn't expect us to be where we are if I'm honest. I thought we would have more points, more wins."

But, as they say, scenarios change rapidly in football. Who knows, a better run ahead might save the Saints from relegation.

Optimistically, they could have it started against Ipswich Town next. While the game would be quite important for the Saints overall, it would be a special one for Downes.

Being out of form in recent games, the former Ipswich star would have a golden opportunity to prove his place in the Saints midfield again.

Clearly, a win over Ipswich would see Southampton stride in multiple aspects, including Downes' redemption at the club. Hoping that everything goes as planned.
