Millwall should try to sign Strasbourg winger Samuel Amo-Ameyaw in the January transfer window.

Millwall have put themselves in an excellent position to attack the second-half of the season with a view to gaining promotion to the Premier League, and they should utilise the January transfer window to enhance their chances.

Millwall have an array of excellent attacking options, but there is room for another key addition to push them closer to the top-flight and a move for Strasbourg winger Samuel Amo-Ameyaw is one they should be seeking to do.

Under the management of Alex Neil, Millwall sit fourth in the Championship table with 19 games of their season left to play, just three points outside of the top two and the automatic promotion spots.

The Lions’ 2-0 defeat of Watford at Vicarage Road, courtesy of goals from Femi Azeez and Josh Coburn, extended their current unbeaten run of form in the second-tier to five matches.

With 31 goals in their 27 games so far this season, though, only seven teams have scored fewer than them and no team in the top 15 of the table have scored less.

An attacking addition would therefore surely be welcomed at The Den and the versatile, exciting prospect that is Amo-Ameyaw is certainly someone that the south Londoners should be looking at.

Millwall should pounce if Strasbourg let Samuel Amo-Ameyaw leave

Having come through the academies of both Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, Samuel Amo-Ameyaw eventually turned professional with the Saints in 2023.

The highly-rated winger made 12 first-team appearances for Southampton, including three of those being in the Premier League, before being loaned out to Strasbourg in the 2024/25 campaign.

With Liam Rosenior at the helm in the Alsace region, Amo-Ameyaw enjoyed a positive first-half a season on loan in France, with two goals in nine Ligue 1 appearances as Strasbourg clinched UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

He moved to Stade de la Meinau on a permanent basis in the summer but hasn’t quite nailed down a spot with Le Racing, managing just 13 Ligue 1 appearances this term and just four of those being starts.

Having been a substitute once again, coming on for the final ten minutes, in Strasbourg 2-1 defeat of Metz over the weekend, in what was Gary O’Neil’s first league game in charge, Amo-Ameyaw could soon be deemed surplus to requirements at Strasbourg.

Given their abundance of options in the final third, such as Joaquin Panichelli, former Wigan Athletic loanee Martial Godo, Diego Moreira, Emmanuel Emegha, Sebastian Nanasi, Kendry Paez, Julio Enciso, Abdoul Ouattara and Gessime Yassine; it isn’t unfair to suggest he could be on his way out this month.

If that was to be the case, then Millwall should be ready to position themselves right at the front of the queue because the team that does manage to poach him would be landing themselves a real coup.

Samuel Amo-Ameyaw could be a key man for Millwall

In the summer, Millwall tried to sign Alfie Devine on loan from Tottenham Hotspur but the Wigan academy graduate opted to return to the north west to spend the season with Preston North End at Deepdale.

Devine has gone on to be an instrumental player in Preston’s pursuit of promotion this season, redefining himself as more of an all-action box-to-box midfielder under Paul Heckingbottom, albeit still with the natural flair and technical ability of the ‘number ten’ position.

The attacking midfield role is clearly something Millwall had identified as something they had wanted to perhaps fill with Devine and, despite missing out on him, they failed to add in that position.

Amo-Ameyaw isn’t a natural attacking midfielder, but his versatility is something that has helped him show immense promise at Strasbourg, having played as that ‘number ten’ in both the 3-4-1-2 and 3-4-2-1 systems thus far in his career, as well as on both wings and even at right wing-back.

Positionally, Amo-Ameyaw fills a gap in the Millwall squad, but he would also be able to provide attributes that do appear to be missing in the final third, too.

For example, according to FotMob, only Julio Enciso (2.8) has enjoyed more successful dribbles per 90 for Strasbourg than Amo-Ameyaw (2.3). In comparison, Aidomo Emakhu (1.7) and Femi Azeez (1.6) are the only Millwall players to have completed more than one successful dribble per 90 thus far.

Amo-Ameyaw is also creating 1.1 chances per game for Strasbourg and that rate is only bettered by set-piece taker Alfie Doughty as well as both Emakhu and Azeez.

Playing in the top-flight of one of Europe’s ‘big five’ major European leagues and for a team that are targeting UEFA Champions League qualification, Amo-Ameyaw is putting up some underlying numbers that would indicate he would go straight in as one of Millwall’s more effective and most exciting players.

Millwall don’t need extra excitement as getting results and the job done will be enough, but the excitement that Amo-Ameyaw could bring could indeed help them to get the job done more efficiently, with that goals for column needing to be boosted in order to sustain their tilt at the top two.
