Oxford United sacked manager Gary Rowett last week but earned a late win over Southampton as Coventry City extended their lead at the top of the table.
Middlesbrough were held to a dismal goalless draw by Blackburn Rovers at the Riverside which allowed Frank Lampard's Sky Blues to go 12 points clear at the top.
Ephron Mason-Clark gave Coventry a nervous win when he fired an effort into the roof of the net following a long through. Swansea City came close to snatching a point but ultimately the league-leaders held on for the win.
With Ipswich Town drawing with Millwall in the early kick-offs, Hull City had a great chance to move up to third but could only manage a 2-2 draw away to bottom-of-the-league Sheffield Wednesday.
There were plenty of draws on Boxing Day but a win for Bristol City away to West Bromwich Albion puts the Robins up to fifth in the Championship.
The big surprise result of the day was at Kassam Stadium where Oxford United, under interim boss Craig Short, won their first game since the sacking of their manager against the Saints.
Tyler Goodrham had put his side ahead with a stunning shot from the edge of the area before Taylor Harwood-Bellis equalised from a set-piece soon after.
The winning goal eventually came in the 89th minute when Will Lankshear found Stan Mills, who survived a potential handball shout, before finishing past Gavin Bazunu and moving his side out of the relegation zone with Portsmouth dropping down to 22nd.
There's still one more Boxing Day game to go, when Wrexham host Sheffield United in the late kick-off.
