Bookmakers now see a six-team scramble to avoid the Championship’s two remaining relegation places after Sheffield Wednesday’s drop was sealed by a 2-1 derby defeat at Bramall Lane, where both sides finished with 10 men and U2’s Beautiful Day rang out at full-time.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Oxford United are favourites for the drop at around 1/6, with Leicester City and West Brom similar at about 11/8 to 15/8. Blackburn are roughly 4/1, Portsmouth 5/1, Norwich 25/1 and Charlton 6/1.
Wednesday are on minus seven points after 33 games following a tumultuous season with major off-field problems, and will look to rebuild in League One.
Oxford replaced Gary Rowett with Matt Bloomfield before Christmas. Bloomfield oversaw a 2-1 win at Leicester on 24 January and a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough on Saturday, leaving Oxford on 29 points from 33 matches.
Leicester sit third bottom on 33 points, West Brom have 34, Blackburn 38, Portsmouth and Norwich 39 and Charlton 40, with Portsmouth having played 32 games.
Leicester drew 2-2 with Stoke in Rowett’s first match in charge and have ongoing appeals following a points deduction issued earlier this month. West Brom lost 2-0 at home to Coventry.
Blackburn have won two from two under Michael O'Neill. Portsmouth claimed back-to-back away victories at Charlton and Millwall, while Norwich lost at home to Birmingham and Charlton drew at Southampton.
