The second Steel City Derby will take place this weekend at Bramall Lane, and it could very well see Sheffield Wednesday officially relegated to League One by their cross-city rivals.
The derby gained its name because the city of Sheffield was known for its steel industry, dating back to the 1700’s.
The first meeting between the two sides came in 1890 when Wednesday picked up a 2-1 win over a newly formed Sheffield United.
Over the 136 years since, there have been 146 derbies with the wins being split 52/48 in favour of The Blades, edging out their rivals by winning the earlier meeting this season at Hillsborough 3-0 thanks to a Tyrese Campbell brace and a late goal from Tom Cannon.
Wednesday haven’t had a derby day win since February 2012 when they picked up a 1-0 home victory over United, with their last win at Bramall Lane coming back in 2009 courtesy of a first-half Marcus Tudgay winner.
United have drastically underwhelmed this term following their play-off final loss last season, currently 15th in the table with 42 points from 32 games.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have met the incredibly low expectations placed on them given the 18-point deduction they received from the EFL due to their well-documented ownership issues and eventual administration, currently sitting bottom of the league on -7 points and looking likely to have their relegation confirmed by full-time on Sunday.
The hosts come into this off the back of a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park, whilst Wednesday suffered their 23rd defeat of the season in a 2-1 loss to Millwall.
Bramall Lane has unsurprisingly sold out ahead of this weekend, meaning there will be a capacity crowd of 32,050 fans in the stands who will be sure to turn it into a cauldron of noise, exactly how every derby day should be.
There will be plenty of fundraising taking place in and around the ground on Sunday for the Weston Park Cancer Charity, with Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder coming out in support of the organisation.
“My wife Francesca and I got involved in it a few years ago, when she lost both her parents to cancer. We’ve had lots of donations along the way, some huge ones and small ones, but every donation is important.”
